The Nonsuch 30 remains one of the most distinctive and successful Canadian cruising sailboats ever produced. Designed by Mark Ellis and built by Hinterhoeller Yachts, the Nonsuch concept combines an unstayed freestanding mast, wishbone boom and a single powerful mainsail to deliver remarkably simple sail handling without sacrificing performance. With no standing rigging or headsail to manage, tacking can be as simple as turning the wheel, while the nearly 12-foot beam and absence of a conventional mast through the cabin create interior volume normally associated with a considerably larger cruising yacht.
“Revelation” is a 1984 Nonsuch 30 Ultra with a documented history on eastern Lake Ontario. Her current presentation retains the unmistakable Nonsuch profile with a clean white fiberglass hull, contrasting blue hull stripe, freestanding cat rig, wishbone boom, navy mainsail cover, dodger and bimini. A deep cockpit with wheel steering, stainless stern rail, transom boarding ladder, wide unobstructed side decks, dorade ventilation and substantial deck hatches make her equally practical for relaxed daysailing or extended cruising. Historical Nonsuch Association discussions also document Revelation and her former Kingston ownership going back well over a decade, giving this particular boat a traceable Great Lakes history unusual for many boats of this age.
The desirable Ultra arrangement introduced a private forward double stateroom, enclosed head with separate shower, galley to port and a spacious main salon with generous seating and convertible sleeping accommodations. Auxiliary power is provided by a Westerbeke diesel driving through a V-drive arrangement typical of the Ultra-era Nonsuch 30. Combined with her generous cockpit, simple single-sail rig and exceptionally spacious accommodations, Revelation offers the characteristics that have created such a loyal following around the Nonsuch 30 for more than four decades.
